Students with Private Insurance
Students with private insurance coverage (HealthNet, United Healthcare, Medi-Cal, etc.) who obtain services at the Student Health and Wellness Center or with Counseling Services at North Hall may need additional care that is not available through Student Health and Counseling Services.
It is the student's responsibility to know their insurance benefits and obtain authorization to see a consultant.
Students with an HMO insurance plan: Contact your Primary Care Provider (PCP) for authorization. Your PCP will let you know whether or not he/she will authorize the referral. They may require you to schedule an appointment with them.
Students with a PPO or other type of insurance: Contact your insurance company to see if authorization is needed prior to scheduling your appointment. If you need authorization, ask your insurance company for instructions.
Students with UC SHIP
Students enrolled in UC SHIP that need care that is not available at the Student Health and Wellness Center, or with Counseling Services at North Hall, will be referred to a provider or facility off campus.
An Insurance Services Coordinator will contact the student to ask if they have a preferred provider or facility they would like to use, and to provide several options if they student does not have any preference. Once a provider/facility is chosen, their Insurance Coordinator will forward their referral to that office.
It is the students responsibility to contact the off campus provider/facility to schedule their appointment. Once the appointment is scheduled, the student will need to let their insurance coordinator know the date of their appointment.
Students with Dual Coverage
Students who are covered by more than one insurance plan, and are referred to an outside provider for additional care, need to advise the outside providers office that they have more than one insurance. One insurance is considered primary, and the other secondary.
UC SHIP is considered secondary insurance to all other plans except Medi-Cal and Tricare (military).
When you go to an outside office, you'll need to provide that office with the insurance information for both insurance plans you are covered with. If that office is contracted with both insurance companies, they will submit claims to both using coordination of benefits. If they are not contracted with one or the other insurance plans, then you may need to submit a claim to your insurance company for out of network benefits.
