Overview of Cervical Cap
Silicone cap that is filled with spermicide prior to insertion, then placed over the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus and potentially fertilizing an egg. There is currently one type of cervical cap available in the United States: the FemCap. Requires a visit with a healthcare provider for a prescription.
How It Works
The FemCap is a bowl-shaped cap that adheres to the cervix through suction and is inserted by the user. It is available in 3 sizes requiring a fitting by a clinician. The FemCap should remain in the vagina at minimum 6 hours after ejaculation, but it can be worn up to 48 hours after intercourse and can be removed by gently pulling on the loop attached to it. Because it is made of silicone, it can be boiled for cleaning in between uses.
Efficacy
Have not given birth vaginally: 86% effective
Have given birth vaginally: 71% effective
Advantages
- Contains no hormones
- Immediately effective
- Used only when needed
- Can be left in place for multiple acts of intercourse if additional spermicide is used
Disadvantages
- Spermicidal cream or jelly may cause irritation
- No protection from STIs
- Less effective than other types of contraception
