Acute / Crisis Care

An Acute illness or injury is sudden in onset. This could describe a broad range of concerns including sore throats, ear infections, bladder infections, injuries, fractures, and asthma attacks and same-day crisis appointments for mental health concerns.

Acute Care Services does not replace your Primary Care Provider (PCP), but may be an option when your regular provider’s schedule is full and unable to accommodate an urgent visit.

Treatments Provided in the Acute Care Clinic:

  • Nebulizer treatments for asthma exacerbation
  • IV fluids for dehydration
  • Splinting for fractures
  • Minor procedures such as toenail removal, lacerations, and abscess Incision and Drainage
  • Same-Day Crisis Appointments for mental health concerns

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) offers both medical and mental health acute care services on the first floor of the Student Health & Wellness Center during normal hours of operation.

Appointments will be scheduled based on your current medical or mental health issue with one of the following:

  • Medical Issues: Provider or RN (Registered Nurse)
  • Mental Health Issues: Psychotherapist of the day (no cost)

Students are prioritized based on the severity of their problem(s) and may be referred to their primary care provider, acute care provider, or a higher level of care such as Sutter Davis Urgent Care, Davis Urgent Care, or the Sutter Davis Emergency Room.

In the event of an obvious severe injury or illness, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Advice Nurse

SHCS Advice Nurse services are available by appointment at no charge for all UC Davis students wishing to discuss medical and mental health concerns and determine the need for care. These services can help you make informed decisions about your situation and direct you to the most appropriate departmental or campus resource.

Advice Nurse services are staffed by registered nurses located at the Student Health and Wellness Center who provide assistance in person or over the phone. Call (530) 752-2349 during normal hours of operation to schedule an appointment.
