Adjustment

Overview of Adjustment

Adjustment is defined as "a modification of behavior and attitudes so as to achieve a balance between personal needs and interpersonal or societal demands" (thefreedictionary.com). Adjustment is a factor for every student who begins their education at UC Davis.

Signs You are Struggling to Adjust

You may be experiencing common signs of stress, anxiety, or depression, including homesickness. These symptoms may include headaches, upset stomach, feeling sick, sadness, unexplainable crying, relationship stress, inability to study effectively, exaggerated cleanliness, and feeling angry or irritable.

Adjustment can be one of the struggles that international students face as they manage differing patterns in communication, values, food, and social customs. Learn more about adjusting as an international student by reading our health topic on International Students.

What Can Be Done

  • Recognize the signs that you are struggling. In particular, know when there have been changes in your appetite, how you are feeling and in your sleep patterns.
  • Have realistic expectations for yourself. This is a new environment and there is a lot to adjust to. Ask questions, ask for support, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes because this is how people learn.
  • Stay connected with your friends and family back home. Identify new sources of support here, and remember to engage in the activities that help you to relieve stress. Spend time reflecting on your daily experiences to deepen your understanding of how you are doing and feeling.
  • Practice the three L’s (listen, learn, laugh). Listen and observe what is happening around you. Learn about all the resources available to you. Don’t be afraid to kindly laugh at yourself to relieve stress.
