Sore Throat

Overview of Sore Throat

A sore throat is a symptom that can accompany a variety of infections (i.e. viral, bacterial or fungal) or non-infectious conditions (i.e. allergies or acid reflux).

Signs & Symptoms

  • Throat pain
  • Tonsils are swollen, red and possibly covered with patches of pus
  • Fever (get a thermometer and check your temperature)
  • Swollen glands or lymph nodes in the neck

Prevention

For infectious causes:

  • Frequent hand washing
  • Avoid touching your face or eating until you have washed your hands
  • Do not share drinks, silverware, toothbrushes, etc. with anyone

Treatment

  • Treat symptoms with over-the-counter analgesics, throat lozenges and throat sprays.
  • Drink adequate non-caffeine clear liquids (at 8 or more glasses).
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Strep throat (which accounts for only 5-15% of sore throats in adults) is generally the only condition which requires antibiotic treatment. A provider at SHCS Medical Services can see you and make that determination.
  • If you aren't feeling better in one week, or if you are having trouble swallowing, please contact your healthcare provider.
