How to Use UC SHIP

SHCS Service Announcement

Due to scheduled union action on

Thursday, May 1st,

there may be a reduction in services at SHCS.

We are taking necessary precautions to assure your visit to SHCS during that timeframe goes smoothly.

Anytime, including when SHCS has reduced services, students can call the following resources:

Additional support is available: LiveHealth Online for SHIP students (virtual medical and mental health care) and UWill (virtual mental health care).

In The Davis Area

For UC SHIP covered students, all care must begin at the Student Health and Wellness Center or at Counseling Services at North Hall.

When you need care:

Medical: Contact the Appointment Desk at (530) 752-2349, or via Health-e-Messaging, to schedule an appointment.
Counseling Services: Contact North Hall at (530) 752-0871 to schedule and appointment

What to do when SHCS is closed

Outside The Davis Area (In the U.S.)

All services outside of SHCS require a referral from an SHCS provider, with the exception of emergency room or urgent care services, LiveHealthOnline, pediatric dental or vision services for members under age 19, or services of a pediatrician, obstetrician, or gynecologist.
Failure to obtain a referral prior to services being rendered will result in the student being responsible for all costs.

Insurance Coordinators

If you have general questions about UC SHIP, you can contact the Insurance Services office at 530.752.6055.

If you have questions about a referral you received from a Student Health and Counseling Services provider, you can can reach out to your assigned Insurance Coordinator.

Students are assigned an Insurance Coordinator based on the first letter of the students last name.

Emergency/Urgent Care/Ambulance

Emergency room, Urgent Care, and ambulance services do not require a referral. Students covered by UC SHIP will need to provide the facility with their Anthem Blue Cross ID card.

Services must meet the "emergency" definition according to the UC SHIP Medical Benefits Booklet.

Did You Know?

All services at the Student Health and Wellness Center and with Counseling Services at North Hall are covered in full for students enrolled in UC SHIP, with the exceptions of pharmacy and optometry services.

Dual Coverage

UC SHIP coverage is secondary to all other private insurance, with the exception of Medi-Cal, Medicare, and Tricare.

Services Outside the United States

When traveling abroad, you will likely have to use a non-network provider and pay out-of-pocket for care, then file a claim with Anthem Blue Cross for reimbursement. UC SHIP covers most out-of-network care at 60 percent of Usual and Customary charges. (Emergency services are covered at 100 percent of billed charges after satisfying your $150 ER copay.) Any remaining balance above the allowed percentage of usual and customary charges is the member's responsibility.
