We See and Support You!
Student Health & Counseling Services (SHCS) believes that gender-affirming care is essential healthcare.
We acknowledge the unfair treatment that many transgender and non-binary people experience, their limited access to care and the history of gatekeeping within the medical and mental health fields.
We are committed to an ongoing process of ensuring that our students who are transgender or non-binary feel comfortable, respected and supported when seeking our services.
What is the Gender Care Team?
The Gender Care Team is a group of medical and mental health providers at Student Health & Counseling Services who have specialized training in addressing needs of trans students.
The Gender Care Team supports trans students by connecting them to resources and supporting self-defined well-being as determined by the patient.
To find Gender Care Team providers, browse the bios in the Meet Our Staff section or use the website’s search function.
The Gender Care Team’s Training and Support Philosophy
We believe in and use an informed consent model of care, recognizing that many healthcare systems require documentation of support for life-saving gender-affirming care. To that end, SHCS providers offer assessments and letters of support for students while also working to reduce barriers to care.
All Gender Care Team providers are members of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), and adhere to their Standards of Care. They also follow evidence-based practice and national guidelines, including UC San Francisco’s Guidelines for the Primary and Gender-Affirming Care of Transgender and Gender Nonbinary People.
We value shared decision-making between the patient and provider, and highly encourage asking questions. We will also always help to maximize the chances that you reach your care goals by providing referrals as necessary.
