Information for New Students

Welcome to UC Davis!

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) - Medical Services is conveniently located on campus at the UC Davis Student Health & Wellness Center and provides students with wellness, illness, and injury care. SHCS - Counseling Services is located in the center of the core campus at North Hall and provides a variety of counseling services to help students realize their academic and personal goals. The services at SHCS are AVAILABLE TO ALL registered students regardless of insurance coverage. Students pay small fees for most services. Requirements

  1. Health Insurance Requirement

All UC Davis students are required to have health insurance.

  • Enroll in UC SHIP: If you want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you are automatically enrolled — no action is required. (If you are a med student your health insurance is provided through the School of Medicine).
  • Waive UC SHIP: If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by the date specified for your school. UC SHIP waiver application

The services at SHCS are available to all students, even if you waive UC SHIP. Fees for UC SHIP coverage are charged to your student account each term along with your registration fees. UC SHIP benefits, costs, and dates of coverage.

  1. Hepatitis B Requirement

Students 18 years and under are required to document Hepatitis B immunity prior to enrollment. This requirement is satisfied by entering the three Hepatitis B vaccination dates via Health-e-Messaging website.

  1. eCHECKUP TO GO Self Assessment

All incoming UC Davis students are required to take the eCHECKUP TO GO self assessment. This self assessment takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and helps identify personal risk patterns and offers harm reduction strategies related to alcohol use. Upon finishing the e-CHECKUP TO GO assessment and review of your personalized feedback, your completion will be automatically logged into the system. No further steps are needed and you can exit the window.

  1. Smoke and Tobacco Free Campus

For a healthier community and cleaner environment, UC Davis became smoke and tobacco free effective January 2, 2014. Call the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Intervention Services Coordinator to find out more regarding individual tobacco cessation services available at no charge to all registered students at (530) 752–6334.


Student Health Recommendations

While UC Davis has one required immunization for students age 18 and under and there are no required immunizations for UC Davis students who are age 19 or older, students are encouraged to discuss the following vaccination with their health care provider to determine which immunizations might be appropriate for them before coming to campus. In most cases, links to this information are also provided to incoming students by their school or college. Please take the time to look over each section to become familiar with requirements & recommendations and ensure that you don't miss any deadlines. Undergraduate Students (Freshmen & Transfer)

  1. Health Insurance:

    If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by September 10, 2015.

  2. Hepatitis B Requirement:

    The California Health and Safety code requires first time enrollees at the University of California who are 18 years of age or younger to provide a statement of immunization status for Hepatitis B virus prior to enrollment.



Graduate Studies Students

If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by September 10, 2015 (if you are a new student for winter or spring quarter, see the Waiver Deadlines page). If your program begins at a time other than the beginning of Fall Quarter, you may have a different waiver deadline.



Graduate School of Management Students

Daytime MBA Program

If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by September 10, 2015 (if you are a new student for winter or spring quarter, see the Waiver Deadlines page).



School of Education

If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by September 10, 2015. The services at Student Health and Counseling Services are available to all students, even if you waive UC SHIP.



School of Law

Juris Doctor Program

UC SHIP waiver deadline for School of Law students enrolled in the J.D. program is August 10, 2015.

LLM Program

UC SHIP waiver deadline for School of Law students enrolled in the LLM program is August 10, 2015.



School of Nursing

Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Programs

UC SHIP coverage for new NP/PA students begins on June 29, 2015 and costs $1,144 for the summer (through September 21, 2015). Information about UC SHIP benefits, costs, and dates of coverage for the plan beginning Fall 2015, are expected to be available in June.

If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by June 22, 2015. If your waiver is approved, your enrollment will be waived through the end of the 2015-2016 academic year.

PLEASE NOTE

Your summer costs and waiver deadline are specific to new Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant students. If you do not file a waiver by June 22, 2015, you will be charged a non-refundable fee for the summer UC SHIP coverage. If you miss this deadline, you may still apply for a waiver for the 2015-2016 academic year by the fall quarter deadline of September 10, 2015.


Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Masters and Ph.D. Programs

If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must submit a waiver by September 10, 2015. If you waiver is approved, your enrollment will be waived through the end of the 2015-2016 academic year.

Medical Entrance Requirements

Students are required to complete the Health Clearance Requirements upon entry to the School of Nursing Programs. For Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant students entering Summer of 2015, Student Health and Counseling Services must receive all documentation by May 15th, 2015. For Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Masters and Ph.D. students entering Fall 2015, Student Health and Counseling Services must receive all documentation by July 15th, 2015. Those who fail to meet clearance deadlines are subject to holds on enrollment, classroom activity, and/or financial aid.



School of Veterinary Medicine: Class of 2019

If you have comparable insurance and do not want to be enrolled in UC SHIP, you must apply for a UC SHIP waiver by the new veterinary student waiver deadline which is August 10, 2015. If your waiver is approved, your UC SHIP enrollment will be waived through the end of the 2015-2016 academic year. The services provided through Student Health and Counseling Services are available to all students, even if you waive UC SHIP.

Medical Entrance Requirements

Students are required to complete the following Medical Entrance Requirements upon admission to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Student Health and Counseling Services must receive all documentation by June 30, 2015. Those who fail to submit their documentation and are not cleared for matriculation by June 30 will not be allowed to start the DVM program for the 2015-16 academic year and may be required to re-apply for admission.
